8 Amazing Metallica Ballads on Classical Guitar – Medley
Metallica, one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time, was formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield. The band’s aggressive musicianship and complex compositions have earned them a massive fanbase and critical acclaim. Their music spans a variety of metal subgenres, from thrash and speed metal to more melodic and commercially viable hard rock. Here’s an introduction to 8 Metallica ballads, highlighting the diversity and impact of their music.
1. “Enter Sandman” (1991)
“Enter Sandman” is perhaps Metallica’s most recognizable song, serving as the opening track and lead single from their self-titled album, often referred to as “The Black Album.” The song’s ominous riff and haunting lyrics about childhood nightmares showcase Metallica’s ability to blend heavy metal with a mainstream appeal. It became a massive hit, solidifying their place in rock history.
2. “Master of Puppets” (1986)
The title track from their third album, “Master of Puppets,” is a masterpiece of thrash metal. The song features complex arrangements and lyrics that critique the dangers of addiction. The intricate guitar work, including a lengthy instrumental section, highlights the band’s technical prowess. It’s often regarded as one of the greatest metal songs ever written.
3. “One” (1988)
From the album “…And Justice for All,” “One” is a haunting tale of a soldier who loses his limbs and senses in war, inspired by Dalton Trumbo’s novel “Johnny Got His Gun.” The song begins with a clean guitar intro and gradually builds into a furious crescendo, showcasing Metallica’s dynamic range. It was their first song to win a Grammy Award.
4. “Fade to Black” (1984)
“Fade to Black,” from the album “Ride the Lightning,” is one of Metallica’s earliest forays into more melodic territory. The song deals with themes of depression and suicidal thoughts, starting with an acoustic intro before exploding into a powerful metal anthem. Its emotional depth and musical complexity make it a standout track.
5. “For Whom the Bell Tolls” (1984)
Another classic from “Ride the Lightning,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls” features a memorable opening bass line by Cliff Burton and lyrics inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s novel of the same name. The song’s heavy, mid-tempo riff and epic feel have made it a staple of Metallica’s live performances.
6. “Seek & Destroy” (1983)
From their debut album “Kill ‘Em All,” “Seek & Destroy” exemplifies the raw energy and speed of early Metallica. The song’s aggressive riff and rebellious lyrics made it a fan favorite and a staple of their live shows. It captures the essence of the thrash metal movement that Metallica helped pioneer.
7. “Battery” (1986)
The opening track of “Master of Puppets,” “Battery” starts with an acoustic intro before launching into a full-throttle thrash assault. The song’s blistering pace and tight, aggressive guitar work make it a perfect opener for one of the greatest metal albums ever made. It’s a celebration of the power and intensity of metal music.
8. “Sad But True” (1991)
“Sad But True,” another hit from “The Black Album,” features a heavy, down-tuned riff that drives the song. The lyrics explore themes of identity and self-destruction, delivered with Hetfield’s trademark growl. The song’s simplicity and power have made it a favorite among fans and a highlight of their live performances.
9. “The Unforgiven” (1991)
“The Unforgiven” is one of Metallica’s most successful ballads, blending soft acoustic passages with heavy, distorted sections. The song’s introspective lyrics and unique structure set it apart from traditional metal ballads. It’s a testament to Metallica’s ability to innovate within the genre.
10. “Creeping Death” (1984)
“Creeping Death,” from “Ride the Lightning,” is a fast-paced, epic song that tells the story of the biblical plague of the firstborn in Egypt. The song’s relentless energy, powerful riff, and anthemic chorus have made it a fan favorite and a live staple. It exemplifies Metallica’s ability to combine storytelling with musical ferocity.
Metallica’s music is characterized by its intensity, complexity, and emotional depth. From their early thrash metal roots to their more polished, mainstream successes, the band has consistently pushed the boundaries of what metal can be. These ten songs provide just a glimpse into the rich and varied catalog of a band that has left an indelible mark on the world of music.

Awesome, dude! Absolutely fabulous; thanks for posting!
But will they let you play any of this at the guitar store when you go BUY a guitar? No. DENIED! Just like stairway to heaven at the NAMM
That’s a flamenco guitar, not classical, yes?
Can we just take a moment to take in the fact that he did this all in one go.
hes played each one hundreds of times before this i bet
Sure. But none of these are particularly difficult to play. Nonetheless, a terrific job and very cleanly recorded with an excellent guitar tone.
And the transitions are amamzing
I cant believe this isn’t the top comment
Could be he did each track then ghost played while they where playing
Crazy these young punk kids composed such masterpieces
drunkards too lol
drugs give hell of skills
It’s not age, but sorrow that gives birth to such haunting beauty.
*metalhead
Very true. And they themselves haven’t been able to reproduce this level of work in many years.
You know the metal is good when it holds up on acoustic
inspectrgajit most music is the same way
That’s my whole theory of music writing
Fact
inspectrgajit its a classical guitar lmao
Classical guitar
The fact that all of these songs can be played so beautifully on the classical guitar with no effects is a testament to the awesome musicality of Metallica
I had a moment of realisation with this video , how blessed my generation is for the internet and all the amazing artists that share their work for free. Thank you
Awesome <3
Ikr its amazing how much we have :” ) Praise God! and Remember, never forget how dark or hard things get, You ARE important
Absolutely! I grew up with Metallica..
I was feared being a metal in old times 😉😂
yes!
that is actually sad that you consider yourself lucky for money perspective. Earning it is far more valuable. I used to go to my local music shop and buy K7’s upon covers until I found a jewel.
We don’t deserve that transition from Fade to Black to To Live Is To Die. It’s too good for us.
Am is the best chord.
@@mr.rubicon1193 one of the better open chords, I love c7 tho
It would ha e made for a smooth transition to the unforgiven aswell
I play that transition too while practicing. It sounds beautiful
Dm is Powerfull in my opnion
You hear “One” and think, “oh, this is simple and easy” and then…..no
There’s quite a bit that can be learned by a beginner but it’s when you start getting deep in the song is when it gets complicated, I’m a beginner so therefore I play like half of the song lol 😂 😅but most of the parts that he is playing you can get, Im learning from the tabs app, helps a lot
It actually is pretty easy, except for the solo hahaha keep trying and youll get It in no time
Its not that hard acually. The first riff is wery to learn but the solo gets a bit more complicated. It took me a about a year to learn the whole intro on the song and i practiced like 10 minutes a day or less.
I got to be honest, One is not that hard, the hardest part is just the last solo and a little of the the solo after the second chorus, the riff is just strange to get put like 2 weeks and almost everyone can pulled it out i think
It is for a few seconds
I have to say “Thank you” to YouTube’s recommendations.
Me too
you’ve no idea how many times i listen to this. whenever im having a tough time, bad day or just to chill and relax. on top of that its slowly building up the desire to pick up a guitar and start learning to play.
Awesome! Glad you enjoy it 🙂

Hetfield’s feel for melody is undeniable. I believe that is one key reason why Metallica went to the stratosphere above the others – There are more technical thrash bands – but they could not hold up like this with a single instrument and no effects or band to support. Hetfield is a poet. True art is timeless and makes a way for others to join in. These tunes stay with you and offer consolation over and over again. Kudos to the player – 1 take, clean, both feel and technicality are there.
And they abandoned the melodic music that we relish. Now they just make songs they can easily play live
James is a beast of a musician.
Allot of the melodical intros were written with Cliff Burton being the main composer they stopped after he died. Not because they got lazy. Burton was a master composer .
@@paulflynndoyle87 Metallica never stopped writing melodic intros, where are you getting this from? It’s like you haven’t listened to anything they’ve done post-Master of Puppets. Cliff’s contribution was massive but let’s not pretend like most of Metallica’s melodies and harmonies weren’t written by James.
Finally!! Someone put that feeling into words
“Metal is just screaming”
So some say
-my mom
Well these aren’t metal riffs just because metallica plays them lmao.
@@wannabeserpento99 but there many clean riffs on Metal songs. And we have the power ballads from Metal/hard Rock bands…
Clean and acoustic are part of metal
Yeah, I’ve heard this argument so many times. But it’s clearly from people that have never actually listened to metal. I know some is, but bands like Metallica and Iron maiden are actually very melodic. People just assume all metal is death metal. Stoooooopid 😀
“When I was a teenager, I used to sit in my room late at night and play Metallica on the guitar. Now that I have three music degrees, I sit in my room….late at night….and play Metallica on the guitar….” ~ Charles Alexander Allred
Hell heck ya!
Proof that even with 3 music degrees you still end up sitting in your room late at night playing Metallica on the guitar without a job!

Good things don’t ever change.
The best thing about metallica is that they aren’t just about being metal and thrash only, they also have a beautiful clean and harmonious sound
Unlike slayer who are brilliant musicians who write music that is utter crap
Hearing these songs played on the acoustic guitar really makes you appreciate how well written they are.
I’ve found that there is something in a well crafted song, that it can seemingly be played in multiple genres and sound natural.
ABSOLUTELY!!!Amazing works of art.
very well said. To be able to incorporate a symphony (S&M) into their music illustrates your point. The depth and breath of the melodies and riffs are poetic.
just wait until you hear music arranged for the piano..
It’s a classical, but yeah.
All the dislikes are from the ladies that saw that ring on his finger
